Overview

Join our team as a Paralegal Specialist and support the Bureau of Justice Assistance's (BJA) Public Safety Officers' Benefits (PSOB) Program by reviewing and analyzing supporting evidence for PSOB death, disability, and education claims. You will identify issues of fact and law, track and report case data and metrics to the COR and PSOB Director, and prepare documentation for the Public Safety Officers' Educational Assistance (PSOEA) Program, ensuring claims are accurately supported and progressed through the review and appeals process.

Work Schedule and Location:

Remote: This full-time remote position will work Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm

Responsibilities

  • Work with PSOB Senior Benefits Specialists, Benefits Specialists, and the PSOB Director throughout the claims process to review and analyze supporting evidence and identify issues of fact and law.
  • Following claim number assignment, review assigned PSOB death and disability claims, identify potential issues, and note the initial review in the PSOB 2.0 portal; meet with the PSOB Director and/or Benefits Specialists to discuss the claim.
  • Capture, track, and organize PSOB data and metrics, and report on them to the Contracting Officer’s Representative (COR), PSOB Director, and BJA senior leadership.
  • Support tracking and processing of PSOB cases at the Hearing Officer and BJA Director appeal levels.
  • Perform customer service for dependents of fallen/injured officers seeking educational assistance through the Public Safety Officers’ Educational Assistance (PSOEA) Program.
  • Prepare PSOEA claim documents — requires strong organizational skills and mathematical calculations in Microsoft Excel; request and follow up on required documents; draft documents for review/approval by PSOB Benefits Specialists and the PSOB Director.
  • Provide a general review of all new PSOB claim information.

 

Qualifications

Required: 

  • Associates Degree or higher
  • 5 years of benefits/claims-specific experience, or 6+ years of paralegal-related experience

  • Must be a U.S. citizen meeting the DOJ Residency Requirement (3 of the last 5 years spent residing in the U.S., working overseas for the U.S. in a Federal/military capacity, or as a dependent of a Federal/military employee serving overseas)

  • Must be able to pass a Government security background investigation and qualify for a Minimum Background Investigation (MBI), as this is a moderate risk public trust position

  • Must have a home office within the United States equipped with appropriate internet and telephone service
