Overview

FWI is building a team to support the Library of Congress National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled (NLS), which serves eligible readers nationwide through a network of 90+ cooperating libraries and provides free braille and recorded materials to people who cannot read regular print. As a Digital Accessibility Specialist, you will analyze current and future assistive technologies including AI-powered tools and text-to-speech solutions, evaluate their integration potential with existing NLS products like BARD applications and digital talking book machines, and assess patron acceptance of emerging accessibility technologies. You will research market trends, conduct comparative analysis of commercial accessibility products, and develop recommendations for incorporating cutting-edge accessibility solutions into NLS service delivery.

Work Schedule and Location:

Remote: This full-time remote position will work Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm eastern time.

Responsibilities

 

  • Analyze current and future states of talking book and braille delivery technology
  • Evaluate opportunities to leverage AI tools and deep-learning speech synthesis enabled text-to-speech (TTS) functionality
  • Assess patron acceptance of new accessibility technologies
  • Research integration possibilities with existing NLS products (BARD applications, DA2, Braille eReaders, Alexa Skill)
  • Provide cost comparison analysis of commercially available products and potential competitors
  • Develop recommendations for incorporating improved TTS performance as it becomes available

 

Qualifications

Required: 

  • In-depth knowledge of accessibility technology
  • Expert-level knowledge of Americans with Disabilities Act/Section 508a of the Rehabilitation Act (ADA/508)
  • Expert-level knowledge of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG)
  • Current knowledge of related accessibility technologies
  • Minimum three (3) years of applied experience with collaborative/co-design approaches that prioritize the preferences, aspirations, and lived experiences of people with disabilities
