Overview

Join our team as a Paralegal Specialist and support the Public Safety Officers' Benefits (PSOB) Office at the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) by providing essential paralegal and administrative support for federal benefits programs serving public safety officers and their families. You will assist with case file management, prepare legal documentation, support appeals processes, and ensure compliance with program regulations for death, disability, and educational claims.

**This position is contingent upon contract award**

 

This full-time remote position will work Monday through Friday between the hours of 6:30 AM Eastern Time and 6:30 PM Eastern working 8-10 hours a day between these hours. 

Responsibilities

 

  • Assist with the preparation, review, and organization of case files for death, disability, and educational claims under the Public Safety Officers' Benefits (PSOB) Program.
  • Conduct initial reviews of claims to ensure all required documentation is included and compliant with program regulations.
  • Provide paralegal support for Hearing Officer Appeals and BJA Director Appeals, including drafting, organizing, and tracking legal documents.
  • Serve as a point of contact for claimants, survivors, injured officers, and public safety agencies, offering guidance and responding to inquiries regarding federal benefits.
  • Research and analyze applicable laws, regulations, and policies related to PSOB benefits to support claims processing and appeals.
  • Collaborate with other team members to ensure timely and accurate processing of claims and appeals.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records in the PSOB case management system.
  • Assist in drafting correspondence and preparing case summaries and reports for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure all interactions with claimants and agencies reflect a compassionate, respectful, and customer-focused approach.

 

Qualifications

  • Paralegal Certificate or a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution (a field with
    legal emphasis preferred)
  • At least two (2) years of paralegal experience
  • Must have reliable internet and telephone services to perform the required tasks.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills to manage multiple cases and deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to interact with claimants, stakeholders, and team members professionally and compassionately.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately.
