Overview

Join our team as a Facilities Assessment Consultant and play a vital role in evaluating and enhancing museum and library facilities for the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). This temporary, part-time position involves traveling across the U.S. to conduct thorough onsite assessments, identify issues, and provide actionable improvement recommendations. Utilize your expertise in engineering, architecture, or construction management to deliver high-quality reports and communicate critical findings, all while working independently in a flexible, consultant capacity.

 

This position must be able to work weekend and evening hours. 

 

Position will pay a flat $800.00 per site visit plus $200 for training and all travel expenses paid. 

Responsibilities

  • Conducting thorough assessments of museum or library facilities (on-site) to evaluate existing conditions, identify potential issues, provide recommendations, and final summaries for improvement
  • Producing accurate assessment reporting and communicating critical information to the team
  • Conduct inspection of building structures, systems, and equipment to identify deficiencies, hazards, and maintenance needs
  • Performing detailed, high-quality site visits to evaluate their physical condition, relevant codes, safety, standards, and functionality without assistance
  • Utilizing industry-standard assessment tools and methodologies to gather relevant data and information
  • Traveling to job sites unassisted to document completed work and gather information for incorporation into reports

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, Environmental, or other relevant industry accreditation
  • Experience with performing building assessments/inspections
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate findings effectively
  • Background in applying square foot (sqft) costs to commercial building renovations
  • Proficiency in computer skills, including iPads, Procore, Google Maps, Microsoft Office (365) Suite, and on-line collaboration tools such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams
  • Experience with using measuring devices (Humidity, Temp, lengths)
  • Able to start assessments within three to four weeks after signed agreement.
  • Able to travel to facilities for on-site facility assessments
  • Insurance (general liability insurance, workers compensation, and car insurance) to perform the work listed above
  • Knowledge of libraries and museums, industry standards, regulations, scopes of work, and other requirements and standards related to facility management and safety (e.g., ADA, NFPA, OSHA) is desired
  • Knowledge of educational and culture public building use (traffic levels, time of day use, areas of foot traffic, etc.) is desired
  • Knowledge of the appropriate location of damage prevention units (sprinklers, sensitive items vs non-sensitive, etc.) is desired
